Vignette 5: Use of EBICS Funding

          These are happy days for Dr. J. J. Walker’s lab. During the course of his EBICS research, his trainee makes a potentially dynamite discovery that could significantly advance the Walker lab’s field of study.  Although it’s not within the scope of EBICS stated goals, Dr. Walker decides to divert his EBICS resources to following this promising lead.

Questions

1.     What type of disclosure should Dr. Walker make to his fellow PIs, EBICS directors, and the funding agency that he is changing course?

2.     Does it matter whether the resources diverted are monetary or time (either his or his students’)?  How?

3.     How would your opinion change if the discovery had a large commercial potential (i.e. J. J. gets rich), rather than high scientific impact (i.e. the world is a better place)?
